Generalist Tax Manager

Summary of Responsibilities:
The Tax Manager is responsible for the efficient, accurate, complete, and timely review and preparation of tax returns including individual, partnership and corporate tax returns and consolidated and multi-state returns. Advanced technical skills in a variety of tax and accounting areas, along with well-developed and applied management and supervisory skills are required.  Tax Managers generally have at least seven years experience.

It is expected that our Tax Managers:

  • Perform technical tax reviews of all tax returns.
  • Assume full responsibility of tax accounts assigned. This includes being responsible for personnel scheduling, compliance with due dates and monitoring time budgets.
  • Begin and complete tax research projects, including the ability to present findings in a clear, concise, understandable written form.
  • Act as a resource for tax preparers/specialists and audit staff on specific tax issues and/or questions.
  • Assume tax preparation responsibility for the more complex business returns.
  • Assume client service responsibility for clients.
  • Manage time effectively. This includes the ability to manage multiple engagements at one time and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.
  • Possess strong computer skills, including the ability to work with Lacerte Tax.

Competencies of our Tax Managers:

  • Demonstrates the functional and technical knowledge and skills to do the job at a high level of accomplishment.
  • Begins to identify specific tax strategies for tax planning purposes.
  • Applies complex tax concepts to the preparation and review of tax returns (either business, S Corp, C Corp, Individual, Gift Tax or Trusts) including analyzing information and performing complex calculations of book/tax differences.
  • Effectively supervises staff, seniors and supervisors
  • Skilled in Problem Solving i.e. generates and evaluates possible solutions to problems.
  • Skilled in organizing people, projects, deadlines and work appropriately; takes the time to structure and organize the project for the team including planning and wrap up meetings.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in accounting and/or other appropriate academic major, as well as CPA certification
  • Approximately 7+ years experience working in tax for a public accounting firm, or industry experience.

Generalist Tax Preparer

Summary of Responsibilities
Generalist Tax Preparers at Gatto, Pope & Walwick LLP are primarily responsible for organizing and coordinating clients’ tax data for accurate, timely completion of individual, trust, partnership and corporate tax returns, including consolidated and multi-state returns. Other responsibilities include the preparation of federal and state quarterly estimated payments, assisting with tax audits and light research projects.

Tax professionals are given a wide variety of diversified tax assignments under the supervision of different professionals.

It is expected that our Tax Preparers:

  • Raise questions and begin to recognize tax issues.
  • Become familiar with the basic electronic tax and traditional library research sources.
  • Possess strong computer skills, including the ability to work with Lacerte Tax.
  • Take initiative to progress professionally.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills.

Competencies of our Tax Preparers:

  • Grasp concepts quickly and demonstrate knowledge of basic technical skills.
  • Prepare standard tax returns following firm procedures and policies.
  • Skilled in Problem Solving i.e. follows directions and knows when to ask for help
  • Completes deliverables in a timely manner.
  • Takes ownership of tasks and is able to work with others to prioritize work assignments.
  • Asks appropriate questions/seeks counsel when faced with difficulties

Audit Manager

Summary of Responsibilities
The Audit Manager is responsible for overseeing multiple audit engagements and is responsible for resolving all accounting issues that arise during the audit engagement. The Audit Manager performs most engagements with minimal guidance or supervision. The manager has demonstrated an ability to assume full responsibility for directing engagements and special assignments. The manager can effectively review working papers, financial statements, and reports of discussions with clients. The manager directs the team of supervisors, seniors and staff, reviews programs, ensures that assignments are accomplished within the budgeted time, reviews working papers for accuracy and completeness, and reviews the financial statements for presentation and adequacy of disclosures.

It is expected that our Audit Managers:

  • Coordinate the various phases of an engagement with the partner, including staff requirements, locations to be visited, and job planning and scheduling, and plan the logistics of the engagement.
  • Take ownership and be fully responsible for all phases of an engagement.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with client management throughout the year, and possess a thorough knowledge of the client and all facets of client’s business.
  • Establish expectations of value to be delivered. Participate in performing audit procedures, especially focusing on complex and/or specialized issues. Collaborate to plan engagement objectives and an audit strategy that complies with professional standards and appropriately addresses risk.
  • Understand the client's industry and recognize key performance drivers, business trends, and emerging technical and industry developments. Stay informed of general business/economic developments and their impact to the client.
  • Develop people by encouraging individuals to think for themselves and take responsibility for their contributions to the team. Delegate work successfully.
  • Assign work to team members on the basis of their knowledge and capabilities and supervise staff
  • Review with the partner any significant audit findings that raise questions involving accounting principles or statement presentation.
  • Communicates progress of engagement, problems and resolutions to the partner and then the client.
  • Prepare or review financial statements, notes, schedules, management letters, and tax returns for later discussion between the manager or partner and the client.

Audit Supervisor

Summary of Responsibilities:
The Audit Supervisor is responsible for overseeing audit engagements and is responsible for resolving most accounting issues that arise during the audit engagement with the guidance of the audit manager. The Audit Supervisor performs most engagements with minimal supervision. The Audit Supervisor will direct audit staff and instruct them in the work to be performed, review the work completed and direct necessary revisions. The Audit Supervisor reports to either a manager or partner.

It is expected that our Audit Supervisors:

  • Coordinate the various phases of an engagement, including staff requirements, engagement planning, scheduling, etc.
  • Study and evaluate the internal controls, organization, systems or other appropriate items and prepare or review the audit program
  • Assign work to staff members on the basis of their knowledge and capabilities and supervise them on projects
  • Review with Manager or Partner any significant audit findings, financial statement presentation or other matters
  • Prepare or review financial statements, notes, schedules, management letters, income tax returns, reports, programs, systems, policies and procedures for discussion with the client;
  • Supervise the observation of inventory counts

Competencies of our Audit Supervisors:
